Acousto-magnetic Systems (AM or 58 KHz systems)

Apart from detecting the AM security hard tags which tend to be used for fashion, these systems also detect the 58 KHz label or the DR label which are mainly stuck to packaged goods or merchandise to prevent shoplifting. These labels incorporate two strips of magnetic material that are placed inside a protective plastic label. The thin metallic strips are not bound together, but are free to oscillate mechanically.

When a live (non deactivated) label enters the magnetic field emitted periodically by the 58 KHz EAS system, the special magnetic amorphous material of the DR label strips converts the magnetic energy to a mechanical vibration and the label begins to resonate which induces an AC voltage in the receiver pedestal of the 58 KHz EAS system. If the AM label signal meets all the parameters i.e. correct frequency, repetition of signal harmonics, then the alarm of the security tagging system is activated. The DR label can be deactivated by demagnetising the magnetic material in the label by the use of an AM label deactivator, so that it is not detected by the tagging system. AM labels can also be activated by the use of an AM label activator which re-magnetises the magnetic strip
